All,
I forgot to mention that I switched careers. When I am finished with my Masters in Secondary Education in English, I will be teaching at my local high school. My first degree was a Bachelors in Business Management. --- NatalieT
Hi classmates,
I'm Natalie Tsinnijinnie, alot of people mispronounce my last name. The "T" is silent by the way. I'm taking this class because it is online and I'm over 300 miles away from the valley. THis class is a prerequisite that I need it to fullfil some of the requirement to advance to the next level. This fall I'm moving to the valley to attend ASU. Like some of you, I am new to all this wiki stuff. The past few days I took some tours of all the areas since I need to get acquinted with this course. It is overwhelming, but hey, it's part of learning a new technology. Anyways, I'm new to the literature 'stuff', I've got a whole lot to learn and I'm see that some of you have someh interest in Modern, British literature ... and now this American Literature before 1860. How interesting, I've learned something (distinguishing the different literature.) I hope to expand my english skills as well, by the way, english is my second language. I learned to speak it until I was about 10 years old. And, I'm working on a Masters in Secondary English education starting in the fall at ASU. -- NatalieT
Hi everyone,
I’m so glad to see that I’m not the only one who finds this technology a little daunting. I’m graduating with a bachelor’s in English Lit this August. My education within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has been to this point pretty archaic in that it’s excluded almost all computer technology save word processing and internet research. I’m glad to see that in addition to the course related knowledge, we’ll also be gaining some practical skills. I’m here because I never took this class as a freshman or sophomore as I should have and I need it for graduation. I look forward to collaborating with all of you.

Hello,
My name is Tara Clare and this is my first online MCC course. Honestly, I never heard of "wiki" before so this is a new learning experience for me. Although it appears quite overwhelming, I am sure with time I will catch on (Probably after several “trials and errors” along the way) ☺ --Ahh...Tara, you've never hear of Wikipedia?--Shelley I didn't know they were related - how funny is that?? Ok - maybe not so much funny as lame because I didn't put it together hee hee.......--Tara loved that class - read so many awesome novels... 11th grade, yep. Start with native American Lit and end with Barbara Kingsolver.Dolmii: Whoops! I forgot about the "Before 1860" part.''
I am taking this class for personal enlightenment. A few months ago I was reviewing my personal library and I noticed that I tend to read more modern literature than anything. I would like to become well rounded and hope this class provides a solid foundation to set me on my way. I am not degree seeking, just interested in experiencing new things and expanding my knowledge in general.

You should try drugs... no, not really. I am Devon, and elsewhere, Nooccar. You're all smart cookies and can figure that one out. I teach @ MCC and at a local high school, where I develop the American Literature curriculum. I am here to play.--So hopefully some of you are starting to realize that my colleague Devon is having some fun with the course. This is the beauty, and downfall, of wikis! This is why so many of your instructors don't let you use wikipedia as a source...anyone can change the pages! To start paying attention to who is saying what (if they don't label it as such) check out the "history" link at the bottom of each page. --Shelley
Shelly, are you saying you won't accept any work we get off of Wikipedia? -- NatalieT--NOT NECESSARILY...YOU JUST HAVE TO ADDRESS THE "WIKI-NESS" OF IT WHEN YOU EVALUATE IT AS A SOURCE.
Devon - American Lit is 11th grade correct? I believe it was when I was in high school - I

Hello,
My name is Dolmii Dee Remeliik and, like Tara Clare, this is my first online course. I've been having difficulty, for the last 2 hrs. or so, managing the first few instructions listed on the "wiki" course syllabus. However, I'm getting the hang of it as I go along.
I'm taking the class because it satisfies my english humanities and because I'm looking forward to learning about modern literature--eek, this is Early American Lit...granted, it's modern compared to British and World Lit! - Being new to literature and having English as my second language, I've come to find literature, fiction, and all kinds of writing to be my main interest and passion in this course of education. I hope to pursue a career in creative writing (along with marine biology).
I've chosen to take an internet course because it was the only ENH 241 class offered during this summer session and also, having learned from fellow classmen who have taken an internet course and who have claimed such a course to require devotion, time and NO PROCRASTINATION, I thought it would be a challenge; a learning experience to help me manage time and organization.
I hope to learn from this class the importance and meaning of the early American literary works and being able to analyze such "art." I expect to, if one can make sense of this, struggle with great effort to achieve satisfactory results. (I'm being humble but one would like to achieve OUTSTANDING results. Only if one would be able to resist the tempting thought of, "Oh. I'll be able to do that assignment tomorrow. Hee!) ~ Dolmii

Hey. I'm Alicia Padovich and this is not my first online course. I took a full semester while I was in Russia in the fall. Although I'm going to go ahead and admit they were ten million times easier to figure out. I'm actually a little frightened with all the stuff I have to download and whatnot, but ce la vie.
Anyhow--I'm taking this class to sastify one of my four lit courses for my Secondary Education in English Degree. Also, I chose this class because I am always up for learning more about literature, and I have not taken Any American Lit since high school. I would really like to gain some more insight into literature found in America as compared to the British and World Lit of the same time and how they do and do not correspond.--You should enjoy that you get to select what you'll be reading and focusing on! Shelley I expect a bit of a challenge but not busy work or overwhelming assignments, (I've got another English class over the summer too! x_x) All in all, I'm hoping that I can practice enough patience and control to get my work done on time.

Hi! I'm Ty. I am taking this class as it is a required course for my major. I am planning on majoring in Journalism and Mass Communications. I am taking this course this summer so that I can transfer to ASU in the fall and have all of my prerequisites done so I can be ready to take my core courses. I would like to learn more about American Literature so that I can be a well rounded journalist. As part of the course I expect to read books and write papers.--Yes, American Literature is cultural Capital for writers! Shelley
Hello, I'm Darin!! I actually just posted my introduction as a comment (still getting used to the wiki thing), so I'll be brief. I'm a junior at ASU and need this class to graduate with a Bachelor's in English Lit. I should be graduating next may, and hope to attend law school after that. I expect to learn a lot more about American literature, it's central themes and contexts, and to gain a better understanding of the authors of that time. I'm excited, simply because all of my English classes so far, with the exception of Western American Literature, have been British based. Yahoo for America... Darin - I posted my intro somewhere else too. I can't find where I put it. Anyways, best of luck to graduating with your Bachelor's in May. I plan on graduating with my Associates in May. So did you change your mind about your degree? You are getting your Bachelor's in English Literature and then going to law school? Good for you though. Education is so important!! Well nice to meet you. April Penman
Darin and April - I was just as confused as the both of you. I think I'm in the right place too. However, i wish the best of luck to both of you in your education. I'm taking this class to learn about our history and increase my writing skills. - Natalie Tsinnijinnie

Hi! My name is Jamie Alger. I am going to be a junior at ASU and I am majoring in Secondary Education in English. I need this class to apply for the teaching program for the fall. This is my first Internet class and first time using wiki. I can tell that taking a class over the internet is going to take some getting used to, but I also like being able to work on my own, at my own pace. I love English and I think I am going to like this class!
I am looking forward to looking at U.S. literature in general! I like that we are able to explore the different periods in our own ways. This class is going to keep me busy, but I am glad that we get to work with texts that are of interest to each of us. I expect to learn about U.S. literature through researching, reading, and writing. I can tell that I will learn many new things about the Internet and its resources as well. Jamie - What grade do you plan on teaching? I am going to school for Elementary Education. I plan on teaching 2nd-5th. I also am going to be transferring to ASU to get my Bachelor's but not until next fall. April Penman

Hey everyone. My name is Neil Sherman. I am taking this class because it looked kind of interesting to me. I like literature and like having an excuse to read it.
I chose this class over any other because it was available online and during the summer. I am working full time, have two kids, and a pregnant wife. Needless to say, I am busy, but I will say it anyway. I am typing at work as we speak. Internet classes work well for me.
I want to learn about some new authors--cool, so that means you'll pick authors and texts you haven't read before. The one "problem" with this set up is that students picks texts they've already read. Shelley. Literature shapes society and I would like to learn more about those who have shaped the country in which we live.
I expect to learn more about those who have shaped our society.
I look forward to working with you all, and working on a wiki. This is new for me and I am not sure I know how it works yet. If you see stuff posted in the wrong place, its probably mine. Neil - I feel your pain on the busy thing. I work 80 hours a week and this is my second internet class for the summer. I also will be doing most of my homework at work. I am working right now (ha, ha). Anyways, if you can, you should come to the open lab that our Professor is holding for us. I am going to go during my lunch break and get further clarification on exactly what is expected and the process for all of our assignments. Maybe I will see you there. Nice meeting you. April Penman

Hello everyone. My name is April and I am 20 years old. Honestly, I am taking this course because it was offered online and it fulfilled one of the requirements for my degree. I work 80 hours a week and this is the second online class that I am doing--sleep? Shelley. You can definitely say that I am a busy girl. I am looking forward to getting to know you all better. I have a lot to learn about American literature. Nice to meet you all.
Hello, everyone. It’s nice to meet you all! My name is Marylee and this is my first internet class. I am also taking a five week class in audio production and found myself thinking, “What did I get myself into!!!!” (Ha ha) I’ve calmed down and I am now getting excited at the thought of having en excuse to read at work. I admit my knowledge in literature isn’t as big as I would like it to be, but I’m sure with this class it will definitely expand. The reason I am taking this class is because I am majoring in secondary education in English. Who would have thought that the girl who hated English class would turn out to major in it--it happens more often then you think ;-) Shelley? Hopefully, I would get a hang of this wiki….

Hi, My name is natalie newmeyer. I am taking this course via internet to catch up on some credits required to transfer to ASU. This course will be my first experience with internet learning. I must say I'm a little intimadated by the technology, however, being an internet savvy person I think I can manage (and if I don't I'll be really embarrased for referring to myself as internet savvy).
I'm an English major--well then you should find this class radically different from typical literature classes-Shelley. I love reading and critically thinking about literature. I recall reading some really interesting work when I took American Lit. in high school, though I wasn't a big fan of Hawthorne. (Is anyone?) Anyway, good luck everybody.

Hi everyone,
Just getting back from a business trip and trying to get everything setup for the course now. My name is Mitch and I'm going back to school to pursue an education in writing and literature (first degree in Engineering Physics). I'm an adult student (married, three daughters) working at Boeing in Mesa as an engineer. I have a strong interest in music (I study classical guitar and early music as a hobby) and literature. I hope to someday produce a good piece of writing, maybe combining my interests in music and fiction. I'm starting out a little behind, so I'll rush to catch up with the rest of you. I've been accepted into a distance learning program in English with the University of Illinois in the Fall, so I am taking this class to fill in my final lower division requirement for the transfer.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello and try out a Wiki edit. I better get back to the syllabus now... I'm looking forward to the course.

Hi everyone. My name is Brent and I am a current Sophomore at ASU Main majoring in Journalism with a minor in French. I am taking this class to fufill my English Humanities requirement so I can enroll in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism in the Spring semester. I am excited for this class! This is my second summer that I am taking a internet class. My first summer I had to sit in class and miss out on the cool summer holiday's that my parents take to Martha's Vineyard, MA or Nantucket, MA. I have a great interest in literature and writing so I hope to expand my knowledge this semester. Good luck this session and its great to meet you all. :)

Hi Tara and Devon.
Nice wiki-meet you both. Like you Tara, I also hope to be well-rounded in literature.
And Devon, I also would like to teach English (grammar and literature) back at my home island so I would appreciate any advice you offer, considering that I plan to teach at a high school level.

Dolmii you seem rather ambitious, that's awesome. I hope some of that spreads throughout the class, I could sure use some I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with all this now! haha
and Devon that's awesome that you're a teacher, I one day hope to get there myself. My good friend Greg is also an American Lit teacher. Can I ask you--did you specialize in American Lit or did you just go broad with your degree, I'm trying to figure out exactly what I should do with mine....

Hi Everyone! Dolmii, I probably could have just googled it, but where is the island of Palua exactly in relation to its neighboring islands? I've actually never heard of it. Anyways, My name is Darin, and I'm actually a junior at ASU. I had some room left at MCC, and I need ENG 241 and 242 as general requirements for my English Lit major. I should be graduating next may, and plan on attending law school the following fall. Most of my classes thus far, with the exception of Western American Lit, have been circled around British Literature, so I'm excited to get a better grasp on early American Lit. I, like most of you it seems, am getting used to the strong technological aspect of this course. Hopefully I get better as I go...

Hello everyone. My name is April and I am 20 years old. I am taking this course because it is one of the classes that I can use for my Associates degree in Early Childhood Education. I chose this class because I felt that the information covered in this course interested me. I expect to learn tons from this class since I do not know very much about English Literature (especially before 1860). I am going to be at the open lab today on my lunch break so I can get further clarification on the assignments for this course. Hope to see some of you there.

Most people I talk to are just going through the motions to attain some ultimate goal and often don't appreciate the knowledge they gain in college. I hope you get a lot out of this. Tara - I am always impressed by people who take classes for what they want instead of what they need to check a box on a list. Though I do need a course like this to continue my English studies, my whole return to school is in order to do something I've always wanted. I think it's safe to say that you will be a better student and get more out of a course when you are truly in it to learn.

Neil - I know how you feel. I have three daughters myself (8,5,1) and work full-time. I have found that internet courses, especially accelerated ones, can be quite time consuming, but it certainly makes it easier to take breaks and help out around the house when needed. Sitting at a computer at work during the day helps a little, too. Good luck. This looks like it will be interesting to me.
