Resources about Nathaniel Hawthorne

1. International Information Programs, “Outline of American Literature” revised edition.  Chapter 4, The Romantic Period, 1820-1960, Fiction. Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896). Dec 2006 http://usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs/oal/lit4.htm Thomson & Gale, “Nathaniel Hawthorne 1804c. 1864” MCC Biography Resource Center.  2007 Galenet Database.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He is the author of The Scarlet Letter, which was written to describe the portrayal of Puritan America. The book highlights the Calvinistic “obsession with morality, sexual repression, guilt and confession, and spiritual salvation.” Therefore, Hawthorne’s theme on his writing reflects on the behavior of sexual and religious freedom. In fact, the metaphor of his novel reiterates the practice of early Puritan colonists. Hawthorne was an egotist, and his writing accounts for his selfishness. As a youth, he was withdrawn, introverted, and haunted by an ancestral curse. One example of his literary work is Wakefield, this story is about a man “who had left his family to live twenty years in secret in the next street.” (Thomson & Gale) From the reading, this website is one I used to study the early American literatures. The main point of the website is help a novice like you (students) and I uncover the realistic past of our people. As I mention before, this literary period of the Romantic time is an example for us to realize how the past has come to shape our societal life today. This is trusted site because it is a dot gov website. It covers not only the textbook of the book I read for this section, but it also links to other credible topics. One you might be interested in is Global Issues in Science and Technology or Health.
2. Clark, Nancy Brewka. Nathaniel Hawthorne: Hawthorne's Struggle and Romance with Salemhttp://www.literarytraveler.com/literary_articles/nathaniel_hawthorne_salem.aspx

The website is an article in chronological order about the life of Nathaniel Hawthorne. There are many website out there on the information highway, and plenty of people to post information. It helps me to read a little background information on these poets and writers. This way I can grasp the author’s purpose of writing. The URL is not from an educational website, however the person that put the article together has a list of sources to help her. Therefore, this tells me this website is a reliable site, due to the extensive research Clark put into writing her article.
