1. Crouse, Jamie. “If They Have a Moral Power: Margaret Fuller, Transcendentalism, and the Question of Women’s Moral Nature.” ATQ 19.4 (2005): 259-279
This article focuses on Margaret Fuller, an intellectual, activist, and feminist “unafraid of her own brilliance.” Fuller was devoted to women’s rights. She argued for women’s advancement to further the development of human potential. Most Transcendentalist thinkers believed in women’s rights, but agreed with the conventional thought that women were superior morally. Fuller did not base her argument on this thought. Instead, she saw women’s rights as a way for women and men to finally come together and share a common nature. Fuller saw all human beings as souls in need of the freedom to develop. Her passion for human potential makes her a major Transcendentalist thinker, even though she was not highly recognized as one until recently. The article focused on the ambitious characteristics of Margaret Fuller that separated her from others during her lifetime, also stating her impact on the Transcendental Period and women’s progress. The article comes from a scholarly journal.
