 This website is a short biography of James Fenimore Cooper.  Cooper was an American author who wrote between 1820 and 1851.  Cooper was the son of a wealthy judge who founded the city of Cooperstown, New York.  Cooperstown was on the American frontier at the time and his life on the frontier inspired his stories.  Cooper was an author and social commentator.  He died in Cooperstown in 1851.Cooper was the most popular author to write about life on the frontier.  His masterpiece “Last of the Mohicans” is a quintessential American frontier novel.  He is important because he becomes the poster boy for American frontier writing.  The frontier was fascinating to the American public and Cooper’s writings helped to further romanticize prevailing notions.   This resource is helpful because it gives background on Cooper’s life.  It is important for the reader to know a little bit about the author’s personal life and up bringing so that he is better equipped to understand the work of the author.
