Resources about Harriet Beecher Stowe

1. Marck, John T. “Harriet Beecher Stowe: Her Life and Writings.” __About Famous People__. 16 June 2007 < http://www.aboutfamouspeople.com/article1013.html >.

The purpose of this website is to provide information about the famous people in history. Harriet Beecher Stowe was an essential figure during the time of slavery in America. In her book Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Stowe brought to reality in the North the human side of slavery. She inspired much slavery debate and for the first time, readers felt the evils of slavery. This resource explained the motives and inspiration behind Stowe’s writing. She did not want to attack Southerners. Stowe wanted to expose the realities of slavery.

This website is dedicated to providing educational information about historical figures.

2. “A Celebration of Women Writers.”  Ed. Mary Mark Ockelborn.  20 June 2007. < http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/stowe/StoweHB.html >.

This website, from a professor-edited university journal, gives basic historical and biographical information for Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the famous work on slavery entitled Uncle Tom’s Cabin.  The information states that, in writing this book, “Stowe drew on her personal experience: she was familiar with slavery, the antislavery movement, and the underground railroad because Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio, where Stowe had lived, was a slave state.”  The article goes on to note that, soon after the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Stowe became somewhat of a celebrity among abolitionists, touring both Europe and America giving speeches on her most famous piece.  I usually deem anything from a renowned university as credible, and this came from Pennsylvania University, so I have no problem accepting its validity.
