Resources about Orestes A. Brownson

 1. Carey, Patrick W., ed. The Early Works of Orestes a. Brownson: Volume V. Vol. 5. Milwaukee: Marquette UP, 2004. MesaCommunity College Library. 02 June 2007.

This website was written to discuss the work of Orestes A. Brownson, a Transcendentalist author. In Brownson’s early work he used Transcendentalism to define his political, religious and philosophical beliefs however his philosophical perspective later changed. Brownson was an important icon to the Whigs, as they used his work to debate the Democrats. Brownson’s writings help one to understand Transcendentalism as he was an extreme individualist who took his writing and made it unique. He had a great sense of spiritualism. He took that spiritualism to a new level from other author’s in that era. Thus he can be used as an early example of how Transcendentalism was and a later example of what it isn’t. This website is a great source in giving background about the author’s life. It lists several of his writings and briefly discusses what they were about and why they were important to Transcendentalism. This is a creditable website as it has an author, citation footnotes and a publisher. Since the document was published and footnotes are sited we can gain a sense of accuracy of the information. I accessed this cite through Mesa Community College Library ebrary. tcatmull
